Bio
Richard Maltz composes instrumental and vocal music for large and small ensembles including opera. He has produced about forty compositions, most of which are neoclassical. He has received more than one hundred performances of his music nationally and abroad. His commissions include the South Carolina Philharmonic, Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, and Susquehanna Symphony Orchestra.
Maltz was raised in Randolph, Massachusetts. He attended Berklee College of Music and earned degrees from the universities of North Texas and South Carolina. He studied composition with Robert Ward, Ben Johnston, Dick Goodwin, Samuel Douglas, Martin Mailman, Phil Winsor, and Thomas Clark. He taught theory and composition at USC Aiken retiring as a University of South Carolina Distinguished Professor Emeritus.
Maltz and his wife live in Abingdon, Maryland where he enjoys singing with the Harford Choral Society. He is currently working on Valley of the Kings, a comic and dramatic opera based on his own libretto.
