Commemorating the battles of Lexington and Concord, Patriots Day contains densely-scored blocks of sound alternating with silence and triadic harmony, and slowly-evolving passages of expressive melody, in fragmented form.  Christmas Scherzo is a lightly-scored scherzo and trio, evoking the spirit of Christmas.  A lyrical aria for mezzo soprano follows (in a chamber scoring featuring the harp) on a sentimental Thanksgiving-day story.  Fourth of July is a raucous finale, complete with fireworks and a patriotic hymn.
